It may be “the world’s oldest profession” but the emergence of large scale sex trafficking in India’s smallest state is a new and deeply disturbing phenomenon. Over the past five years, over 500 women have been arrested for prostitution. ![]() A few days earlier, an 18-year-old from Karnataka had also been sent to Merces, after yet another sex racket was busted in a beauty parlour in Vasco. Soon after, they were joined by a Bangladeshi native, who was caught on the way to meet a client at Colva beach (along with her trafficker). One from Maharashtra, the other from West Bengal (the third from the video is not accounted for), they were duly produced before the sub-divisional magistrate in Mapusa, then remanded to the protective home in Merces. After an instant uproar, Calangute police arrested ostensibly the same two women the very next day. This scene unfolds on the Calangute to Baga road after dark, where thousands of people pass every evening. Eventually, all three move on, while being berated by the person behind the camera. ![]() A third woman is perched on a scooter, carefully watching over the proceedings.
